What is Prayer and Can Anyone Do It?

Prayer. What a wonderful faith discipline that anyone can participate in. People all over the world pray. People of different religions, cultures, backgrounds, ages, and financial status, etc. all pray. They all pray to God or to some higher being. Yet, if you ask most people what prayer is, you will get a lot of different answers.

Prayer can mean different things to different people. Prayer is a practice that most people really find comfort in. You don’t need special skills to pray or any special type of education. It’s a discipline that doesn’t belong to any one person, one belief system, church, faith, or culture. Anyone can pray.

If you are new to prayer and have questions, I want to help make prayer simple for you.

I invite you to see prayer as an invitation from God to join Him in a relationship of communion.

Please consider prayer as a time of you joining God to share your heart and listen to His heart. Even though you have needs, prayer is more about you coming to God for relationship to know His will and to do His will.

Some individuals come to prayer with already preconceived thoughts about prayer and about God. Some are concerned that their prayer may not be heard, or prayer must be done in a certain way or time of day. Some even feel a lack of confidence to pray.

If you are one of these individuals and you have questions about prayer or a hesitancy in prayer that’s okay. Let’s clear the prayer waters for you. Let me show you how you can begin to pray today and partake of His fellowship.

Here are some wonderful truths I want to share with you. Remember…

  • Prayer is simply communion with Him. It is involving your entire self with God. A mystery about prayer is how can a human give their entire self to Him and commune with Him? The answer is that prayer is more about Him communing with you and you cooperating with Him in your time with Him. Prayer is a two-way relationship with the greatest friend ever.

  • Prayer can be done anywhere at any time. You can pray under your breath, driving in a car, in the shower, in a board meeting, at a football game. Prayer is you talking to God about anything and that can be done anywhere. There is no rule to where or when prayer can happen.

  • Prayer doesn’t have to be perfect. There are no perfect words to pray to God. He totally understands your heart and your words. No eloquent speech is required. You don’t need a degree to pray. Jesus being your sacrifice qualifies you to pray.

  • Prayer is also silent. Many people sit in silence and pray from their heart. They have thoughts and emotions that God connects with, and they never speak a word. That is also prayer. Tears dropped in silence are powerful words that only God understands, and He counts those as precious prayers.

  • You can have written prayers. You can write out your prayers. You do this by getting a journal and writing down what you want to say to God. When you are finished you wait to hear a response and then write down what you believe God said to you.

  • Prayer is intentional. Find an intentional quiet place to pray. This can be in your room, in a favorite chair in the house, on your patio, lying in bed, prayer walks or in a closet. Go to this place to not be distracted. Make it your sacred place where you meet God.

Dear friend, remember this, prayer is what you make it. Prayer is a deep expression of the heart towards God. It can be your personal time of meeting with Him in the secret place.

Let your prayer attitude be that of a little child. Just go and be with the Father. He wants you to come.

Start today. Cultivate a time of prayer 5-10 minutes. Meet with the most important person of your day and hear His heart.
